*GASP* An Update!

It's 3AM, I just got home, and it looks something like this outside. Meh, update time!

So. First things first, my apologies for being inactive since July... :S I umm, realize its now February and neglecting a blog for that long can probably get you jailtime in certain countries, but there we are.

Oh, and happy ridiculously belated new year everyone! Shinen omedeto gozaimasu!

What have I been up to in the past few months? I've actually decided to give up all hope on the real world and spend the rest of my days completely immersed in World of Warcraft. Let's face it, reality is only really a place to visit on occasion and for brief periods of time. Also druids are simply far more interesting creatures than we mere humans, and our "real" world desperately lacks magic.

I'm kidding. Geez, there's plenty of great ways to escape in the real world! So I've been learning Japanese! And yes, I still need subtitles to watch Anime +__+ I swear everyone just assumes people learn Japanese for the sole purpose of watching Anime. There's manga too! It's been fun, challenging, but not nearly as daunting a task as one might think... Kanji is tough, but fun in its own way...

I'm also attending a French university for the first time, which is a really nice change. U of M is a great school, with some really talented profs I have to say... Met some really cool people and I'm having a good time ^__^

In other news, I'm writing a story! It's been in the works for a while... To be honest I've been keeping it more or less to myself, but I think I need some external pressure to motivate myself to get on with it already. It's a fictional story of youths from different parts of the globe in a modern context. I'm trying to touch on the concept of cultural identity in a globalized and hyperaccelerated world. Since I'm a bit of a hopeless romantic, it also involves around a love story, exploring the meaning of innocent love in what I perceive to be a media culture bombarded with sex icons, confused values and the threat of loss of companionship in the classical sense. The protagonist is conflicted, at times elated and falling in love with a girl he hardly knows. I want to really focus on the emotional aspect, the heart that speaks a language quite different from the logical mathematics of the mind.

At the same time I'm trying to touch on broader, international issues of human development, war and the emotional effect is has on individuals involved. I've been interested in the human cost of war for some time now, and I'm trying to project my feelings into the lives of fictional characters... Which is quite a challenge! It's also about family and friendship, and the effects of distance. I'm particularly interested in the the metaphysical distance that leaves things unsaid by people who care for one another.

With that said, I'm trying to choose an appropriate excerpt to introduce the story and main characters, I'll probably start another blog just for the project. I kind of like the idea of sharing a creative work with people for free, it seems honest!

Right then! So please send me any ideas, thoughts, comments you might have on those themes, even experiences you've had in the past... The project is in its initial stages so I need quite a bit of inspiration to get this moving. I appreciate the help!

I'll be posting with more details again soon!

Well, I'm not one for literature (dunno why that is, unless it is software manuals), but I think I have a title for you. Well actually you came up with it. Just read out your tags for this post:
Friendly Globalization: A Japanese Love Story.
